Washington’s Wild Blackberries

I’m still learning a thing or two about our new stomping grounds in the Pacific Northwest. Just yesterday I ran across a humorous article on NPR that highlighted the joys of wild blackberries to the local newcomer. You Can Never Have Too Many Blackberries by Deena Prichep was absolutely spot on. Longtime locals learn the loathe the thorny ‘weed’ bushes while newcomers recoil at the prospect of cutting them back since they, ahem, give you berries.

A month or so ago we noticed young berries growing in an uncultivated lot nearby. Over the next couple of weeks the fruity nubs of the prickly bushes ripened into a seemingly infinite supply of supple blackberries. We have been taking  full advantage of the free supply.

Tonight we went out on our second berry picking adventure. Our previous collection of berries went to my first canning venture where I made a delicious batch of Wild Blackberry Jam. We gathered as many blackberries as we could, unsure of exactly what five cups looked like, visually. After that experience, it was pretty clear that once you’ve got a colander full of blackberries and arm striped with scratches, you’ve got supply enough for a big batch of Blackberry Jam.

Of the eight jars  of Jam made, we’ve finished nearly two and were all too happy to send four jars off to family in Oklahoma City.

Deena found some unique recipes calling for blackberries. Unfortunately, during this first trimester of pregnancy I’ve been an incredibly picky eater.  The nearly constant nausea has me wincing at the foods I used to love, and merely thinking of vegetables and international foods makes my stomach turn. I won’t be able to try any of the blackberry recipes that Deena recommends in the near future, but we plan on freezing up an extra supply so I can try them when I get to feeling better.

Until then, I’ll be chowing down on peanut butter and wild blackberry jam sandwiches.

Zoo Babies and Other Babies

We decided that it was finally time to hit up the local Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium this weekend. I usually love these things, but I’ve been so fatigued lately that I was pretty much useless. Most of the little energy I had was focused on the prevention of hitting small children in the head with my purse, or giving any strangers accidental ‘flat-tires’ during my zombie-like stroll. Yet, somehow I was also able to snap a few photos of the most animated animals at the Zoo.

We were drawn to the zoo with the promise of Zoo Babies. Right now there are a few Red Wolf Pups at the zoo, they were romping further away in the exhibit. Cute overload. And has anyone else noticed that Wolves don’t look dangerous at all? Their adorable appearance is all too deceptive!

It took a lot of restraint to not push this monkey out of the hammock so I could steal a snooze, trust me.

Watching the Walruses swim back and forth in their pool also instilled a sense of envy. I could make a happy life for myself as a big fat walrus. Really, I could! Eat, swim, be merry.

The single-most adorable thing we saw all day was the most playful Puffin in the world. A little boy had a stuffed dog up to the glass driving the Puffin into a frenzy. The bird put up an adorable fight to win the prize through the glass, without success.

A pretzel with cheese and an Ice Cream cone later, I was completely exhausted. Creating a human being is exhausting work, even when you do get 10-12 hours of sleep a day.

Did I mention I had that little side project going? Yep, I’m pregnant. Close friends, family and some of my twitter/blogging buddies know about the pregnancy already, and many thanks to them for the tips on eliminating the nausea!

The first trimester will be over soon, but not soon enough. Until then, please don’t call me before 10 am, and please avoid eating any Indian food around me. Your shoes look so much nicer without vomit all over them. 🙂

Upgrades

I feel like I’ve finally arrived in big-girl world. I’m no longer using the same laptop I received after high school graduation (although it’s still neatly packed away in the closet) and I’ve split from my old Blackberry smart phone ways. And today, I’m proud to announce, I finally have a premium macro lens for my Canon.

A few years ago, a friend of mine gave me her 35 mm Canon Rebel. Yes, GAVE! It was the most amazing photography starter gift I could have hoped for. I learned a bit on it, but still wasn’t pegging down any great technique. Last year, after passing that camera on to yet another friend,  I upgraded to the digital Canon T3i I have now. With my busy work/commute schedule at that time, learning my way around my camera was put on the back burner.

With all my spare time since moving to Washington (read: housewife life is great), I’ve learned a lot about photography techniques. Unable to achieve the results I had been seeking with the tools at hand, I sought refuge in Adobe Lightroom 4. It helped. For a bit. But I was still experiencing those flat photos you would expect from a point and shoot. Just like I’ve always done, I tried to get by the best I could with what I had (which I was still very grateful for!).

After moving some investment money around, we were able to throw down for a new macro lens. And with another technology update, I feel more grown up.

JSYK:  If you’re interested in upgrading as well, Tamron is having some great rebates right now! Head over to your authorized Tamron dealer to get up to $100 back in rebates. I mailed mine off today.
