Venice, California

Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo Hello! It’s been a while since I last posted. I hope you all know how to find your way back to my poor, neglected blog.

I’ve been otherwise occupied by the baby boom in Fairbanks (so many newborn sessions!), and by my membership and leadership in various entrepreneur clubs in town. I’ve also rekindled my love-hate relationship with long distance running. We’re on good terms right now, but as I integrate more speed work, those sentiments might change. We’ll see if this summer I can push beyond the 10 mile wall I’ve never been able to push through.

Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo Our vacation to Oklahoma and California is long over, but not long forgotten. I will never in my life forget how Woods vomited all over Isaac during our connecting flight from Dallas to Los Angeles. Twice. We arrived to LAX, and headed over to Venice Beach with a half dressed baby (that’ll teach us to forget backup clothes), and an incredibly cranky toddler. I distinctly remember a very bored Margot slipping out of her seat belt and into the narrow airplane aisle, refusing to sit back down because she wanted to do Yoga instead. Why am I harping on the travel, and not the destination? Maybe because during our 10 day vacation, we spent approximately 24 total hours en route to our destinations. Living in Alaska has its downfalls; the distance from the lower 48 is #1 on the list of grievances. Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo

I will say one thing – revisiting these warm, vibrant Los Angeles travel photos brings me right back to my happy place. Sunshine on my face, the white noise of the crashing waves nearby, the smell of salt and Mediterranean food in the air, the perpetual hustle of street performers advising you that you have money and you should give it to them — Southern California; I can’t believe I let 10 years pass by without seeing you! Never again will I let that happen. California: I had completely forgotten how delicious your food is, how warm your days are, and how beautiful your people are. I love and miss you.

Margot’s first warm-weathered beach experience. The poor Alaskan kid tried to build a snowman with the sand. It was so darling to see my beautifully sheltered child experience an entirely different climate than she’s used to. She’s a beach person, it turns out. I can foresee the UCSB college applications in our future, already.

Then again, she really wants to be a cat. I don’t know of any University of California schools that offer that major. She might be out of luck. Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo

Confession: of all the times I’d been to Venice, California, I had never seen the canals! Shame on me. I’m not a proper Californian. We finally got around to it, and boooy were those some beautiful homes on the waterfront. The temptation to hop a fence, and assume the identity of one of these rich people was overwhelming.

Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo Our time in Venice was short — we headed to Bakersfield the same day we arrived from OKC. Day after day we ate our way into day food comas (Mexican, Basque and Chinese food galore!). I hardly recognized my hometown; I was surprised by the solar panel boom, wasn’t sure how to conserve water beyond my normal usage, and didn’t exactly remember how to get from downtown Bako to the NW side (it’s been ten years, people!). I somehow expected the city to slip into a post-apocalyptic downward spiral, but the gang violence, tribal warfare, and robotic armies hadn’t taken a hold of the city like I imagined they would. I’ve seen too many movies, I know that now.

It was good to visit family and friends, the warm weather, Trader Joe’s, and Williams Sonoma. I’ll be back in 9 years or less, I promise! Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo Venice Beach, California | Yea Yea Pueblo

Whale Watching in the San Juan Islands

Whale Watching - San Juan Islands

Whale Watching in the San Juan Islands has been on my to-do list since I moved to Washington. So when Jordan came to visit last weekend, I finally had the chance. The 2.5 hour drive North from Tacoma to Bellingham went by relatively quickly, probably because the area is so beautiful. I remember the scenery well from our trip to Mt. Vernon for the Tulip Festival earlier this year.

Jordan and I were out on the water with our fellow tourists all day.  The day started out grey and cloudy, but the sun broke through and shone down brightly. It was still cold. After a few hours, we were both beating ourselves up for being underdressed and neglecting to bring sunscreen. Outside of a flu setting, I had no idea it was possible to be freezing cold and hot at the same time. The wind cut through us like a knife while the hot sun bared down on our shoulders and faces. It was a strange dichotomy, truly. And talk about gnarly, the ocean wind did quite a number on my hair.

Otherwise, it was a beautifully scenic and informative tour. I had no idea here were so many Islands that compromised the San Juans!

It took several hours to arrive at the waters surrounding Henry Island, where both migrating, and native Orca pods fed on salmon. Relief swept the boat when the tour guide announced the first dorsal fin sighting toward the bay. We all crowded around the side of the boat snapping photos or scoping out the sights through binoculars. It was a spectacle.

Now, when my husband and I went to Discovery Kingdom on our California Sojourn a month ago, the Orca show was spirited. The star of the show caught some serious air, comparable to the dolphins we saw later that day. Well, these Orcas were in hunting mode, not performance mode. They tended to skim the surface of the water, only bobbing up once or twice to show us more than their face and dorsal fin.

Still, they did not disappoint.

Our tour of the Islands was not limited to Whale Watching. I counted four bald eagle sightings, one even plucked a fish right from the water! I failed to get any lasting images on my Canon, the eagles are a bit too quick and small for a girl lacking sea legs. Some of that water was mighty choppy.

We also spotted some wild rams on an island just south of Canadian waters. It was exciting! And for the first time I saw how fresh water mixes with ocean water. I had no idea their densities were so disparate.

If ever you find yourself with the opportunity to Whale Watch in the San Juan islands, I highly recommend it. Hopefully you’ll miss the rain like we did!

And many thanks to Elizabeth for recommending Jalapeños in Bellingham! Dinner there was delicious.

California Sojourn

It’s been three years since I’ve been to my home state of California. I spent the first seventeen years of my life there, leaving only for Oklahoma where I went to University. Oklahoma was good to me for nearly a decade, but I’m glad that my husband whisked me away to good ole Washington State. We live much closer to my family in California than before, but after nearly 28 hours in the car this weekend, I realize it’s not quite as close as I imagined.
Yango and Iggy, our dogs, had a really cozy pallet in the rear of our Subaru Forester where they napped during our scenic drive through Oregon. We stayed overnight in Oregon twice during the drive to crop the driving sessions shorter.
75th Anniversary
We didn’t make it all the way down to my hometown of Bakersfield; instead we kicked around Northern California with my brother, mother and nephew as tour guides. It was our first time being to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, CA. Part Marine World, part theme park, the amusement park hosts tourists with animal shows and roller coasters. The dolphin show was one of my favorites, mainly because they caught some sick air. See what I mean?

We also got to check out a few small aquarium-like exhibits and a Tiger show. My nephew seemed to enjoy the animal activities.

On our second day of the California sojourn, we kicked around San Francisco. Every time we visit the city, we like to check out new areas. This time around, we did a lot of drive-by sight seeing (good shutter-speed practice on the ole canon) and hiked around the Sutro Baths.

I’d never heard of the Sutro Baths until my older brother Justin suggested the visit. We hiked around the site, trying to imagine what the original structure looked like. It opened in 1896 as the world’s largest indoor swimming pool establishment (thanks, Wiki!). Now a National Park, the land yields a small cave corridor, old stone structures and various hill shelves where large mason walls one stood.
They even filmed a small portion of Harold and Maude on the site! Remember where Maude protests the war, and ‘falls’ down the cliffside after a scuffle with Harold (or something to that effect)? Yep! It was here. I love stuff like that.

75th Anniversary
75th Anniversary
No trip to San Fransciso is complete without a trip across the Golden Gate Bridge. Our journey across the bridge just so happened to coincide with it’s 75th Anniversary. That day, 75 years ago, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to the public. Presidio was nearly shut down for related events, so we didn’t get to check out the park area, but the bridge isn’t going anywhere.
We were sad to say goodbye, but no vacations are endless. We can’t wait to further explore the Bay Area in the future. Until then, we’re contented to kick around our local Puget Sound.
Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day Weekend!

P.S. As a new military wife, I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a big thank you to all the men and women who have served our country. Many thanks!
