Yukon Quest

I can tell you definitively that if I were to embark on the Yukon Quest, it wouldn’t take long for me to want to turn around and race back towards the cozy home and happy family I would have left behind. Yukon Quest 2014 - Fairbanks, AK

Brian Wilmshurst - Yukon Quest 2014 - Fairbanks, AKFirst of all, I’d probably want to Instagram or Tweet everything I see on my 1,000 mile journey through the wilderness, and a lack of reception would probably not allow that. Second, winter camping is not my forte. I just don’t have the greatest tolerance for long exposures to bitterly cold temperatures. I am definitely a summer camper.

What a challenge: 1,000 miles through the Alaskan Wilderness from Fairbanks, AK to Whitehorse, YT. We drove that stretch on our way out here, and I thought it was a long ride by car. I can hardly imagine taking that journey by dog sled. Especially a dog sled team led by my elderly, overweight Beagle, Yango. I probably would elect to have a different lead dog, or we’d likely get nowhere. There are a great many reasons why I’m not cut out for the Yukon Quest — and a great many reasons why I highly respect the competitors.

Each night I can easily track the progress of the racers from the comfort of my cozy living room, glad that I can enjoy the sport from afar. I’m rooting for Curt Perano, because I spoke briefly with his wife Fleur by chance when her toddler Wyatt wandered over to Margot in her stroller at the Co-Op Plaza. The New Zealand natives have been mushing for a very long time, with Curt Perano competing in the Iditarod last year and taking 27th place. What a fun legacy for baby Wyatt to inherit.

I also spotted former Iditarod champ Lance Mackey behind the starting gate. Alaskan Celebrities are much different than the Southern Californian celebrities I’m used to spotting (David Hasselhof, Tobey Maguire). But it’s still exciting to see a famous face!

A Postpartum Post

We’re starting to find our groove around here. But it hasn’t been without a small slice of tribulation.

Baby Margot 2

Our first week home from the hospital was really rough since our dog Iggy turned out to be kid-unfriendly. His behavior from the moment we walked in the door with Margot became erratic and unpredictable, and proved to be too much to put our newborn through. With heavy hearts we had to say goodbye to Iggy and surrender him to the same no-kill shelter we adopted him from. Iggy had territorial tendencies, and the last thing we wanted was for his jealousy to turn even more aggressive towards our new baby. I spoke with a trainer who confirmed that his behavior was not something that could be trained out of him, and she advised we’d made the right decision. I sleep a little better at night knowing that much.

I still cry when I think about Iggy, but I’m confident we made the right decision. Coming down from pregnancy hormones, recovering from an unexpected cesarean birth, saying goodbye to Iggy, and welcoming this beautiful baby into our home was a lot to handle right off the bat, but the atmosphere has become much more peaceful around here.

Baby Margot 4

We’ve been fortunate enough to have family friends and neighbors bring us dinner every night since my mother-in-law headed back east to Oklahoma. Without that help, I can’t image the further disarray our home would be in. Since being promoted from housewife to stay at home mom I’ve often found myself missing daytime meals while trying to catch up on sleep, or feeding Margot. I’ll strike a balance soon enough.

Otherwise, I’m healing from my cesarean nicely and almost back to full swing. Isaac has gone back to work and a mood of normalcy has settled over the home, much like the light layer of dust coating my untidy living room. I’ll get better at juggling everything, but for now I’m really enjoying Margot. It’s easy to get lost in her steel blue eyes, or giggle when she sneezes her tiny baby sneezes. I still can’t believe she grew in my belly.

And every once in awhile, she throws me a grin that melts me to the core, regardless of the baby flatulence that typically follows.

P.S.

I didn’t realize it before, but my baby’s name and dog’s name sound very similar and are in fact indistinguishable to my beagle’s ears. Anytime I ask if Margot is hungry, Yango jumps up and waddles over to his bowl overcome with mealtime glee. It’s one of those funny little things that go on under our roof.

Across the Hours

Lately, it seems that time has been slowing down and speeding up simultaneously. I’m sure I know why, but I’m not in a position to say as of yet.

With certainty, the soundtrack to this changing era in our lives is Beach House’s newest album “Bloom”. It’s exactly as Lindsey Zoladz with Pitchfork says, “‘Bloom’ is also what these 10 songs do, each one starting with the sizzle of a lit fuse and at some fine moment exploding like a firework in slow motion.” Truly profound.

I also expect the passage of time to be indicated by the life expectancy of my 12-year-old Beagle, Yango. The vet gave him only a few months to live this April. It’s now August, and he’s better than he’s ever been (although I can’t say much for his internal malignant tumor). He’s more active, happy and spry than when I first adopted him. Thanks be to Iggy. Our newly adopted dog won’t take no for an answer at playtime. They will run, they will scrap. Joy overwhelmed me when my friends who visited this summer commented on how great Yango looked. I’m optimistic that he’ll be hanging around for at least another year. R-e-l-i-e-f.

There are some major changes in our household afoot. I really haven’t been feeling so hot lately, which explains the recent blog hiatus. I’ll be posting less frequently this month as a result. Rest assured, I’ll be sharing more at a later time.
