Our baby boy is here! Woodrow Paul was born Monday September 8th, at 8:04 AM, weighing in at 8 lbs 1.5 ounces and 18.5″ long.

Even though he’s only a week old, life before he arrived is difficult to recall. That may be due in part to sleep deprivation, but that’s okay. Our chubby-cheeked boy is perfect and we’re so happy to be home with him.

I’m recovering well from surgery, and Margot is adjusting to her role as big sister beautifully. She had extra special attention from her grandma CeCe who flew in to help us out while we were bringing Woody into the world. Even the dog is taking the change in stride.

Isaac’s paternity leave ends this week, then I officially begin life at home with two kids. There’s a lot of trepidation on my end at this prospect, but I’m sure the adjustment won’t be as difficult as I envision (I tend to be a worst-case-scenario worrier). My house will undoubtedly take on a new level of disorder, lazy crock pot meals will nourish us, and the dog will likely go un-walked. I value order highly, but I know it needs to take a backseat to the bigger picture shift at hand. Sorry in advance to my visitors, and while it is very tempting,  please don’t write your name in the dust.

A Fond Farewell to Summer

Thirty-nine weeks, folks. That’s how far along I am today. This pregnancy has gone by in a flash, and I’m feeling all sorts of feelings the closer I get to my boy’s due date.

Summer has faded, and the crisp fall air is upon us once again. This time last year, we were saying goodbye to Washington and heading up North to the Final Frontier. This year, we’re long settled in, and anticipating the arrival of our second kiddo, Woody.

Yango is no longer with us, but we have a new dog Sally who is fitting in exceptionally well. We sold our Subaru Forester, and upgraded to a big fat Toyota Sienna. The power sliding doors, blue tooth, remote start, and back up camera are all reminders that it was worth the dive into the ordinary for sweet features, third row, and decent gas mileage. We know we want 3+ kids, so this move to a larger mommed-out vehicle was inevitable. I’ve embraced it.

So as I mentioned, summer is in the rear view mirror, and fall is here again.

And Fairbanks is slowly folding in for the winter. Every night, squawking geese fly overhead on their way south for their seasonal migration. The night time temperatures drop slowly and precipitously, and the sun fades behind the horizon at a decent hour every evening. Summer was nice, but fall is better. Fall feels normal in the land of the Midnight Sun.

September is here, meaning Woody will be arriving with it. Margot won’t be an only child much longer, and if you’ve been following my instagram feed, you’ve seen me clinging to the final weeks of being a family of just three.

I’ve loved staying at home with Margot; watching her grow and learn everyday since birth has been so rewarding.

Lately, Margot’s vocabulary has been exploding exponentially, and it’s amazing to see how independent she has become. She can throw away her own garbage, feed the dog, feed herself, tell me when she has an uh-oh in her diaper (this is a promising step in the direction toward potty training!), and ask for more of pretty much anything. She’s learned to say please, thank you, buh-bye and no at the appropriate times, and has the confidence to repeat nearly any word you ask her to say.

Today she nearly repeated all of the ABC’s as directed, and demonstrated, by shouting at the TV, that she knows both Cookie Monster and Curious George by name. We’re big PBS viewers around here. It’s my parent’s fault for marrying me off at a young age to the television, and it’s my own fault for harboring the relationship, and fostering it with my own toddler. Against better judgement, we watch a solid hour or two (or more — oops) of Sesame Street and Curious George throughout the day. We’re a TV family, and we own it.

When I need more sleep in the morning, I bring Margot into bed with me, queue up Curious George on Netflix, and let her watch for an episode or so, until I’m feeling energized enough to take on the day. Isaac particularly liked this approach when he came home from the Field last week, and needed more sleep during the weekends. My excuse is that pregnancy is hard when you have a giant belly, and a toddler to chase and corral all day. His excuse is he gets up early, and works hard. So there’s your peek into our parenting failures.

On the weekends when we are well rested and well fed, we have headed out to kick around Alaskaland or walk around downtown Fairbanks, all in an attempt to enjoy the city before snow blankets the land once again. The Saturday activities have all been followed by Sundays of intense cleaning, nursery changes, and project completions. We’ve been busy. And lazy. There’s a balance there, and we’re hitting it in stride.

Today I’m 35 weeks pregnant, and I feel like I’m ready to pop. Each sneeze is a terrifying experiment in abdominal fortitude, and each bend at the hips is a foray into a world of discomfort. At night when I’m so tired I think I could just expire, this baby boy goes into hyper mode and kicks and stretches my insides until I’m sure the only relief is immediate delivery.

My chiropractor has been working wonders on my SPD, keeping me strong enough to endure long days of endless chores and raucous childcare without relying on any oral pain management. I whine about this pregnancy, but it’s certainly been more comfortable than my pregnancy with Margot. I’m able to complete all the tasks that need to be done, and with the help of my Sakura Bloom baby sling from my friend Sarah, I’m able to take Margot’s don’t-put-me-down phase in stride.

Speaking of Margot, she’s entered this exhausting new phase of sleep regression. It’s no fun waking up to her hysterical cries several times a night, but I’m grateful to have such great cuddling time with her and her favorite teddy bear. It’s also good conditioning for what’s around the corner with a newborn. I’m tired now, but I know I’ll be about 20 times more exhausted in a months time.

While Margot napped today (she still sleeps for a good 2-3 hours in the early afternoon, hallelujah!) I got to work on lactation sweets to promote a reliable milk supply in my first few weeks postpartum.

I baked 4 dozen oatmeal chocolate chip lactation cookies, and a dozen of these banana chocolate chip muffins. I used the leftover batter to make a small loaf of muffin bread, bagged it all up, and stored it in the freezer for quick snacks after Woody arrives. I’m already stocking the freezer with baked goods and crock-pot meals so when all of new-baby help is gone, and I’m left to juggle two kids and a household alone, I’ll be able to ease into the transition a little easier.

Isaac is going to the field for two weeks just before Woody’s due date, so it’s even more important that I get all this nesting and food prep done before he leaves. He’s leaving again in October, and January for similar Army training duties. A few weeks here, a month there — I’d take that over a deployment or a hardship tour any day.

Back to these lactation muffins. The active ingredients in lactation promoting foods is brewers yeast and flax seed meal. They’re available at your local grocery store near the vitamins or bulk foods, or at your local GNC. I probably should have subbed in low-glycemic sugar substitutes like agave nectar for the sugar called for in this recipe, but Margot only naps for a few hours, and I had back to back batches of cookies and muffins to complete in a short amount of time. Experimenting with substitutions is a leisurely endeavor reserved for lazy Saturday afternoons, I’ll get to it eventually, though.

Moist and sweet, these banana chocolate chip lactation muffins will be a go-to treat around here while I’m breastfeeding. They’ve got a decent amount of fiber that’s punctuated by semi-sweet chocolate morsels, edging out that health-food aftertaste.

Lactation-promoting banana chocolate chip muffins.
Ingredients
  • 4 ripe bananas
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 3 tbsp Brewers Yeast
  • 3 tbsp Flax Seed meal
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (or dark chocolate chips)
  • Pinch of cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Line muffin pan with paper muffin cups.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mash ripe bananas. Mix in the softened butter until blended, then add the vanilla and egg. Mix until well incorporated.
  3. In a separate, large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda, Brewer’s Yeast and Flax Seed meal until blended.
  4. Slowly add dry ingredients into banana mixture. Stir in oats, and chocolate chips and mix well.
  5. Fill muffin cups with batter until 3/4 full. Bake 25-30 minutes until toothpick inserted in the center of muffin comes out clean.
  6. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, and enjoy!
Notes
Recipe adapted from My Little Poppyseed [br]Store these muffins in an airtight container in the freezer, and pull out muffins on an as-needed basis for longer shelf life. Pop a muffin into the microwave for a minute, and enjoy a ‘fresh’ muffin.
